Black Belt Jonez

Hi Kirk,

I have only been to Pho Hoa a couple times since I moved to San Francisco a little over a year ago. One thing I've noticed over the years is that they are wildly inconsistent and, as far as I know, there is no way to tell ahead of time whether it will be a hit or a miss (such as which day of the week to go, time of day etc etc). That being said, in my humble opinion, when they are on point they are easily my favorite bowl of pho in SD. I tend to skip the rare steak as well, #11 is my jam (with a side of sliced onion and oil if the broth needs it). I'm looking forward to making a stop there later this month when I'm in town.

I was recently at MQMT with friends this weekend (post is forthcoming). Was disappointed by the Mi Quang (and yes, I read your first post so I was duly wrned). Even though the soup is supposed to be dry, there really wasn't any soup in it at all. The owner, a very nice man, said there was soup underneath, but it probably got absorbed. My friends, who've never had this soup before, didn't have any preconceived notions about it so they thought it was good. I've had better versions elsewhere, so I was a bit bummed by how flavorless it was. We did like the purgatory rice though.

I'll have to try that clams dish for a future visit.

still hoping you can get better bowls of pho...

Kirk

Hi BBJ - Agreed; though my last two visits to Pho Hoa have been quite good and even on bads days it's better than most of the newer pho shops in other areas. Hope you have a great time when you're back in town!

Hi CC - Yeah; that Mi Quang looks nice; but isn't very good.

Fingers crossed Kat!

Junichi

"msg flavored hot water" is definitely not good eats. Glad to hear the other dishes are better.

Kirk

Yeah Junichi - That Mi Quang looks good; but it's underwhelming.

I gotta go back to Pho Hoa some time. It use to be our go to spot for me and my dad. I think after one bad stomachache, we probably only went there once after that.

Hope you can share your pho recipe some day! I can always freeze extra broth for the future too ^^
