What a hodgepodge joint it seems like but if cheap is the key to a person stomach so be it. I need to find mine. Ever wonder how cheap cuts of meat are so tender or do we care to know at all. LOL

Dennis

Hi Kirk, I had the Pho here and the soup tasted like a hybrid chinese/vietnamese, at least to me. Wasn't exactly bad but didn't hit that Pho craving spot for me. Been wanting to try more of the Chinese dishes. Commenting from Star Bucks. wee

Carol

hahaha, fugly! Thank goodness I wasn't drinking anything while I read that. Would have had an ASNR, which would have been fugly! :-p

Lynnea

thanks for the recommendation.

When that strip mall first opened (1979-ish?), the current Maxim's was Hong Kong Chef. It was one of the first places in town that served jook, noodle soups and dishes. And it was opened late nights. I haven't been to Maxim's in a few months. But I usually order the beef stew clay pot, gai lan chicken, and mapo tofu.

kat

too bad that fried chicken didn't meet up, I know how you love fried chicken :)

Kirk

Hi Billy - This place does a good job with beef. I'm sure it has something to do with a tendrizing marinade, usually with something like Shaoxing and cornstarch.

Hi Dennis - Wee back at ya'. I'd stick with the beef and seafood here.

Hi Carol - I couldn't think of any other word at the time!

Hi Lynnea - Choose carefully, and you'll get a decent meal here.

Hi Toisan - 30 years ago....... think about that.

Hi Kat - Sigh......yes I love S&P Chicken wings, perhaps a bit too much.

Saya

Hi Kirk,

I love this place. I went there a lot when I was going to SDSU.

The must order are Beef Sate (it's not the one you ordered) It's a soup version. Fish Rice soup is very good for a cold night. Spicy BBQ Pork dish, this is a must must order. (It's not spicy at all but the sauce they made is delicious)

Hopefully when you go back next time you can try these dishes. I miss this place.

Kirk

Hi Saya - I've had the Beef Sate Noodle Soup, which I thought was pretty good. Which is why I order the Sate dishes. Thanks for the other recommendations.

Hungry Huy

LOL "Flavor Duck". Ya get what you ask for, huh.

Ah, I too always fall for the fried chicken wings at chinese/vietnamese restaurants. I mean I eat them, but I'm secretly thinking about Wing Stop the whole time.

Kirk

Hi HH - Flavor Duck is a pretty common preparation. If you're ever in San Diego, you need to check out the Salt and Pepper Chicken wings here....
